How to Use Google Scholar to Expand Literature

If you find an article that you think is great, it is always a good idea to check their references. This will help you build your literature with more historical research. However, what if you wanted to know what happened with the article since it's been published? What impact did it have on the field?

Google Scholar can assist you with seeing the impact an article made after it was published.

You can take the title of the article you have and copy and paste it into the Google Scholar search. Make sure to surround the title in quotations. When your article comes up, underneath is a Cited by section. This will tell you how many citations Google picked up that have cited your original article.

Once you click on this Cited by link, you will see a listing of articles that cited the article you searched. Sometimes there are PDF links, but the library can always request articles for you. Just make sure to do it early! If you find a PDF file from Scholar, PLEASE evaluate it. Below, there is a video on how to evaluate information. Give it a watch/listen!

Evaluating Information

I know that you may stray away from the library's databases and look at what the internet can provide you. If you are not looking in peer-reviewed journals, or do not know what you are looking at, please watch this video on how to evaluate information.
