How can I use AI with OER?

Have you ever read something and wanted to use it only to find out that there are no summaries, abstracts, briefs, questions, etc. that go with it? AI may be able to help you.

AI CAN:

  • Create Questions from a Reading
    • Essay
    • Short Response
    • Expanded Questions
  • Analyze a text
    • Need a Summary?
    • Need to know the 3 main points?
    • Need to find an answer within the text?
  • Create a Table
    • Organize quotes
    • Create search queries to further research
    • Find statistics within the text

Building the Best Prompts

To build anything using AI you have to be very intentional with the prompt that you give. Make sure that you ALWAYS check the answers. AI is a collaborator not the author.

When building a Prompt remember to use the CREATE Model provided by Dave Birss.

C-> The Character or Role that the AI is playing.
R -> The request. What is it that we want? Use descriptors.
E -> Give it some examples or something of a similar style. (This step is optional)
A -> Adjust and Refine "Don't Use" or "Use"
T -> The Type of output. What exactly do you want to be shown?
E -> Extras, they can include: "Don't use anything before this prompt," "Ask me questions before you answer," "Explain your thinking," "Show Your Work," etc.

Want to try it out on your own?

Here are some prompts to get you started, or you can check out the prompts provided by Dave Birss

  • You are a highly experienced writer who writes concise and readable text without stop words, filler words or jargon. I want you to summarise the following text, highlighting the most important concepts. Deliver this as a short paragraph of 100 words. Then list the most important points as a bullet-point list. Finally, follow it with a one sentence summary. The text I want you to summarise is "[TEXT]"
  • Please list the different people who have an interest in [TOPIC] along with a summary of their perspectives and an understanding of their motivations. Write your response as a table with the columns "Audience", "Perspective" and "Motivation".
  • You are an expert researcher with the ability to find information that other people don't notice. I want you to supply me with 10 search engine queries I should use to find mindblowing facts and statistics about [TOPIC & DETAILS]. Make the search terms specific and powerful to help us get to the information we need faster. Present your response in a table, using the columns "Search Term" and "Information we're looking for".

Try it with ChatGPT or something else that you are familiar with.

Creating Questions From a Text

Here is an example of using AI to generate a list of questions from a text.

First enter the prompt. You will need to make this up or you can use others stems to get started.

"As a veteran teacher for the last 25 years, you have successfully created test questions from textbooks that allow students to use a DOK Level of 3 when answering the question. Using the text: [ ], please create a list of 5 short response questions that will be answered by students incorporating a DOK Level 3. (Depth of Knowledge (DOK) Overview Chart: Level 1. Recall/Reproduction, Level 2. Skill/Concept, Level 3. Strategic Thinking, Level 4. Extended Thinking) Please ask me 3 clarifying questions that you have before you create the short response Questions."

In the brackets are two sections from the first chapter of an OER Commons Textbook from Michigan on 7th Grade Social Studies.

By asking ChatGPT to ask clarifying questions, your responses can be geared towards what you exactly want.

You can have ChatGPT ask as many clarifying questions as you want.

Here are the responses:

1. Yes, please provide questions that allow the students to analyze and think critically. (A restatement of what DOK Level was needed.)

2. A mixture of questions, include 2 specific questions and then 3 around the reasons for studying Social Studies. (Can be specific to the reading that you use.)

3. I do not have specific themes to emphasize within the questions. (Feel free to add a theme for ChatGPT to pull from.)

From here you can choose to finish using ChatGPT. It has successfully created Critical Thinking Questions that address the topics in the text provided.

However, you can also push ChatGPT a bit more if you would like, or if you need. Can ChatGPT now go back and answer the questions that it generated?

It can! However, would you get anything similar to ChatGPT's answer from a 7th Grader? Remember, the prompt given was that ChatGPT was acting like a 25 year veteran teacher. The answers, while correct are nothing close to the length or word choice that a 7th grader would use.

The more complicated the text, the more complicated the questions need to be, the more complicated and varied the answers will be. ChatGPT and AI integration is a great starting point when trying to assess students learning, but it should come with some caution as well.
