Search Tips

Books VS Periodicals

While books provide great depth in a subject, they are generally not the most current information in a rapidly changing field such as nursing. Periodicals provide the most current source of information in both print and electronic form. However, periodicals cannot be searched in the catalog; to learn more about articles, go to the Finding Articles tab.

Subject Searching

If you don't know the author or title of a particularly work, you'll have to search by keyword or subject. These tips will help you to locate items in our catalog:

  • Use quotation marks to search for a specific phrase
  • Use boolean operators "and," "or," and "not" to refine your search; "And" will decrease your results, while "or" will expand them.
  • When you locate a likely item, look at the subject headings on the item record for specific subject headings for finding additional books or items.
  • Write down the Call Number. You will need it to locate it on the library stacks.

Browsing the Shelves

Another method for locating items is to browse the library shelves in the subject area you are interested in. You can use the Library of Congress Headings on the left to locate specific subjects you are interesting on the shelves.
