Psychology: Find Empirical Articles

Psychology

Definition and Components

Empirical studies use data derived from observation or experiment. Original research papers that describe empirical studies and their results are published in academic journals.

Articles that report empirical research contain different parts.  These parts relate to the steps of the scientific method.

Abstract - The abstract provides a very brief summary of the research.

Introduction - The introduction sets the research in a context, which provides a review of related research and develops the hypotheses for the  research.

Method - The method section describes how the research was conducted.

Results - The results section describes the outcomes of the study.

Discussion - The discussion section contains the interpretations and implications of the study.

References - A references section lists the articles, books, and other material cited in the report.

Finding

In some databases, you can add methodology as a limiter to your search. This can be done on the homepage of the database, or on the left-hand side of the results page. If the database you are using does not offer a methodology section limiter, you can also add method* (note you will use the * character in the search box) to search for articles that have a methodology section.

PsycArticles has this methodology section.
