Library Media Specialist Program Guide: Organizations

AASL Affiliate organizations are divided into nine geographic regions. Regional activities are coordinated by a Regional Representative and each region is represented on the AASL Board of Directors by a Regional Director.

The mission of the American Association of School Librarians is to advocate excellence, facilitate change, and develop leaders in the school library field.

Founded on October 6, 1876 during the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia, the American Library Association was created to provide leadership for the development, promotion, and improvement of library and information services and the profession of librarianship in order to enhance learning and ensure access to information for all. Our current strategic plan, ALA Ahead to 2015, calls for continued work in the areas of Advocacy for Libraries and the Profession, Diversity, Education and Lifelong Learning, Equitable Access to Information and Library Services, Intellectual Freedom, Literacy, Organizational Excellence and Transforming Libraries.

The International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE®) is the premier membership association for educators and education leaders engaged in improving learning and teaching by advancing the effective use of technology in PK–12 and teacher education.

The Missouri Association of School Librarians (MASL) is the premier professional organization for library media specialists who work in Missouri schools.

The purpose of MASL is:

To advocate for access to school library media center services and resources for Missouri's children.
To develop collaborative relationships with stakeholders in the educational community.
To enable the use of information technologies in Missouri schools.
To provide opportunities for continuing professional education, focusing on exemplary practices in school library media centers.
To recognize significant contributions to the profession and to the improvement of school library media programs in Missouri.

The Missouri Library Association is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit educational organization operating to promote library service, the profession of librarianship, and cooperation among all types of libraries and organizations concerned with library service in the State of Missouri. Founded in 1900, MLA is proudly beginning a second century of service.
