Gaming and the Game Collections: Why Gaming?

Gaming Mission Statement

The purpose of gaming in the Media & Gaming Lab is to enhance the academic and community atmosphere on the Lindenwood University Campus, to support the Game Design program on campus, and to support our greater mission statement.  We recognize that gaming is not only a popular hobby, but also an emerging field of study, covering a wide variety of disciplines.  We also recognize the role that gaming, in a wide variety of formats, can play in enhancing a positive social environment.

Gaming @ the LARC Media & Gaming Lab

The library is looking to offer a variety of opportunities for social gaming throughout the school year. These events will be a time for fun and social interaction, as well as an opportunity for gaming scholarship at Lindenwood University to engage in a live event study. These events will take place once during the Fall and Spring semesters. During these events, we may setup TVs and video game systems for open gaming.  The open gaming depends on what demand calls for; a call for suggestions will be posted at the beginning of the semester.

Our library will be participating in National Gaming Day; a yearly event created by the American Library Association to spread the word about the benefits of gaming programs in libraries. For more information about gaming at the Library and Academic Resources Center, take a look at our Gaming at the MGL web page.

Our library also hosts an Open RPG Tabletop event featuring pen and paper gaming. Faculty and staff gather around tables to engage in roleplaying, storytelling, and gaming in the tradition of Dungeons and Dragons and other similar systems. The event seeks to highlight fellowship between faculty and students outside of the classroom while also supporting the Game Design program and the general love of gaming that crosses the many disciplines offered at Lindenwood University.

If you have a suggestion for a game you think we should play in the library, or if your group would like to host an event, please let us know. You can find a gaming group at Lindenwood's student organization website.

The library has the Playstation 5, Playstation 4, Xbox One systems, and Nintendo Switch, as well as Playstation 5, Playstation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch games in our collection.  We also have a classic PC games collection on the PC in the Immersive Reality and Game Hub, LARC 322. All Lindenwood University faculty, staff, and students are welcome to use them.
